Peacekeepers of the Vast is played out in a series of Missions. Each mission consists of several phases, each of which contains one or more scenes with defined transition points. However, transitioning between phases can occur early due to a complication or player choice.

Phases

Downtime

A downtime phase takes place between missions, and characters are free to pursue their own interests across any number of scenes until they receive a mission briefing and the preparation phase begins.

Preparation

The Preparation phase begins with the characters receiving a mission briefing and their objectives. Once the briefing ends, characters may act. Each character can prepare however they wish - such as by modifying equipment, researching or reaching out to contacts. However, there are a limited number of rolls for each character until last call, which is the final opportunity to requisition equipment by dead drop, and each roll can suffer difficulty penalties due to shrinking time. Following the last call roll, the cell must transit to the mission location or suffer penalties in the form of Heat or mission consequences. Unless otherwise stated, characters are unable to meaningfully prepare during transit due to stresses of making best time.

Investigation

Once the cell finishes transiting to the mission area, the Investigation phase and the critical event clock begins. The Investigation phase is the bulk of the mission, and consists of regular scenes and action scenes as appropriate. As scenes occur, the clock continues to countdown to a critical event. The cell, through their actions, can push this event forward or back, and make any opposition forces more or less prepared when it occurs. A successful Investigation phase may even obviate the critical by resolving the underlying problems. Otherwise, the critical event occurs, and the cell is given a final action scene to attempt to change the outcome.

Epilogue

After the Investigation phase is resolved, an epilogue occurs, narrating the consequences of the cell's actions. Characters also receive rewards at this time, in addition to session end awards.
