The galaxy speaks in many tonuges.

ISL Languages

The 73 polities of the ISL speak a variety of languages, some organic and others constructed.

Languages

  • Basic: a constructed language using SVO order and about ~5000 words. All League worlds use Basic in addition to the dominant language of their area, all characters start with Basic.
  • English: the Peacekeepers of the Vast/Solaran Union is about as boring as you'd expect. also, WE all speak english
  • Chinese: the Peacekeepers of the Vast/Solaran Union is not monolithic. and Firefly is cool.
  • Trilinthian: a language based high-pitched vocalizations and clicks, not unlike a cetacean or dolphin, but with more obvious differentiated pronunciations.
  • Peacekeepers of the Vast/Vesper: a language developed from the arthropod chelicerae of the Vesper species; they also use a degree of pheromone communication, which makes cultural misunderstandings somewhat frequent.

Vernaculars

  • IsLES Tactical Interlac: A language used on large ISLES capital ships that builds on Basic. Many words for "retreat" and "advance", contains most useful tactical words, as well as numerous descriptions of landscapes and a lot of swear words from a lot of worlds. Also known as "Island Slang" to its English-speaking users and anyone who has spent enough time among humans to pick up on their habit of nicknaming things.
  • Peacekeepers of the Vast/Trazinus Prole Slang: A strange pidgin language spoken by the demogrants and underclass on Trazinus, a mixture of useful trade words, discussions of dangerous things, and written in the ancient dead Trazinian script that has been found on the planet and studied these 280 years.
